The science behind USMLEMed
The method rests on four findings from cognitive science and medical education research.
- Retrieval practice. Actively recalling an answer produces stronger retention than re-reading the same material.
- Desirable difficulty. Making the learner commit before revealing support improves long-term transfer, which is why hints cost points.
- Scaffolded learning. Graded hints keep learners inside the zone where they can still solve the problem themselves.
- Case-based learning. Knowledge encoded around clinical presentations is easier to retrieve in a clinical context - including the exam.
